Kingdom of Dirt

Matthew 13: 44 The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

Some people can hear and see the deepest and richest treasure in the field of the Kingdom, and yet digging down deep they come away with only the dirt that surrounds that very treasure. Why is it then that the dirt can be more appealing than the treasure buried in it?

One person's trash is another's treasure. I have come to understand that the only true treasure we can ever have and keep is the word of God that is given freely to us! Some who are blinded and deafend by their carnal desires simply cannot understand this.

I think people cover up the treasure and stick with the dirt for many reasons.

Some just don't see the treasure, I've heard that raw diamonds can look pretty unimpressive, for instance. On the face of it, the Kingdom of God seems upside down, establishing a new order by love and not by force. You would think it never could work, until you try it and persevere with it. It is alien to human nature.

I suppose some people are influenced by others not thinking the treasure is worth it, or else they've not had many examples of the treasure being regarded as such and so it seems less valuable than their hearts tell them it is.

Then there is the willingness to keep the treasure. Giving up control of an outcome and just doing what you know is God's way to do things can be be frustrating, humiliating, painful. You don't experience the joy of being closer to God Himself until after you have done His will in a given situation.

Also, once you've got the treasure, you're not encouraged to sit and gloat over it, and think how much more treasure you've got than your neighbour, which is something status-conscious humans are very prone to.

By the way, I don't think the treasure is just the word of God, it is God Himself, living by His ways, in His love, worshipping His majesty.....
