Safe 7

In my search to fill 'nice and fluffy' week with all things fluffy and nice, I chose last night to watch 'March of the Penguins'. This is a lovely sweet film about thousands of fat penguins walking 70 miles and back and back again to make baby penguins. I thought by the title the film may have been about a group of psychotic penguins marching from the south seeking revenge for global warming and making a bid for world domination - its not! Its nice all the way through (except for a leopard seal catching a penguin), so I thought that I could put some qoutes up as well - nice ones of course!!

'...the restoration of the church will surely come only from a new type of monasticism which has nothing in common with the old but a complete lack of compromise in a life lived in accordance with the Sermon on the Mount in the discipleship of Christ. I think it is time to gather people together to do this...'

-Dietrich Bonhoeffer

I think what Bonhoeffer means by 'new monasticism' is one which differs from the old, the old has its root in the basic idea that in all its varieties it is seclusion or withdrawal from the world or society. A 'new monasticism' is the opposite, and with the Sermon on the Mount as its religious vow or order, would seek to live faith in the midst of the world. By the way the word Monasticism is from Greek, monachos (a solitary person). The Kingdom of God, a new monasticism, calls all mankind to be relational people.

Hey, Dave,

Ditto on the penguins - it's a wonder any survive at all given their environmentm, eh? Tell me God does not have a plan - for all his creation.

Re: Bonhoffer - amazing fellow that. I used a quote of his at my daughter's wedding last year - good observation by my reckoning.

“A Post of Responsibility”

"Marriage is more than your love for each other, for it is God's holy ordinance, through which He wills to perpetuate the human race until the end of time.

In your love you see only your two selves in the world, but in marriage you are a link in the chain of the generations, which God causes to come and to pass away to His glory, and calls into His kingdom.

In your love you see only the heaven of your happiness, but in your marriage you are placed at a post of responsibility toward the world and mankind.

Your love is your own private possession, but marriage is more than something personal - it is a status, an office - just as it is the crown, and not merely the will to rule, that makes the king - so it is marriage, and not merely your love for each other, that joins you together in the sight of God and man.

It is not your love that sustains the marriage, but from now on, the marriage that sustains your love."

Dietrich Bonhoeffer 1906 - 1945
