In the Clouds

And lo' he appeared in the clouds...okay not sugar loaf and not who you think it is This is the landmark monument to the 1st Duke of Sutherland who died in 1833, this can be seen for many miles around, and is cherished as a welcome home sign to returners by road, rail or sea to the Highland town of Golspie

The monument may be cherished by some, but certainly not all, and the Duke was abhorred pretty universally by the common folk for his enthusiastic participation in the clearances.

There have been groups wanting it removed/destroyed, there may well still be. But it does make a good landmark, and it does feature in songs.

Have to admit that whenever i see this monument i simply think of clearances. Last i heard about them removing it was a good few years ago, they were going to replace it with something in rememberance of those who lost their lives, and livelihoods. Pity that never came about.

I never realised this side of it, just a piece of rock on a hill to me, but I guess it could be insensitive. No need to pull it down though, they could build another one though. Have you ever been to Badbea? Or Croich church?
